Science Department Updates

Even as the school year draws to a close, the learning journey continues. The Science Department remains dedicated to offering engaging and interactive activities for students right up to the end of the year.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT SPEAKERS
On Wednesday, May 1, Detective Richard Boyle (senior Owen Boyle’s father) gave a talk to a room full of Central students about narcotics and how police deal with riots. It was an interactive presentation - students were able to wear riot gear.

On Monday, May 6, Trey Gonzalez (Class of 2014) gave a talk on industrial psychology and some of his research. When Trey is not busy as a research psychologist, he also keeps busy as a country music star.

Finally, on Wednesday, May 8, Dr. Mary Beth Hawkins, a Biology professor from St. Mary’s University, took students bird-watching around campus. The guys all had a blast learning how to identify some of our native species.

ASTRONOMY
Coach Curran’s Astronomy classes recently constructed and launched rockets on the football field.

CHEMISTRY HONORS & GENERAL CHEMISTRY
Dr. Ballesteros’ Chemistry classes completed an ice cream lab, where they used everyday items to make ice cream in the classroom. A freezer was not needed at all! Some students brought their own toppings such as chocolate chips, mint flavoring, and Oreos.

ENGINEERING
In Ms. Jarmon’s Engineering classes, students were introduced to various types of bridges. They were then tasked with creating their own bridge out of balsa wood.
