BUTTON BASEBALL TO CONTINUE THEIR WINNING TRADITIONS AT THE HEAD COACHING SPOT

August 1, 2024 – Central Catholic High School is excited to continue its winning traditions with a seamless transition of leadership within the state championship baseball program.

Coach Danny Heep has led our Varsity Button Baseball team and has amassed an impressive 146-48-5 record with two TAPPS State Final Four Tournament appearances. In 2022, the team had a 30-5 record and made it to the State Championship Game but fell short. This past season, the team won their first TAPPS State Baseball Championship in 6A and earned their 4th championship overall (TCIL 1976, 1980, 1984).

Following his seven seasons in charge, Coach Heep has expressed his intention to transition into a supportive role and pass on the reins to a new head coach. Over the past two seasons, Coach Danny Heep has shared the head coaching duties with Matt Flores. Coach Heep will remain on staff as an assistant coach and oversee the recent improvements at Kahlig Park - Home of the Central Catholic Buttons Baseball Team.

“We deeply appreciate Coach Heep’s invaluable contributions to our baseball program,” says Executive Athletic Director Edward Ybarra ‘83.

After a successful tenure as associate head coach for his first five seasons and co-head coaching responsibilities alongside Coach Heep for the past two seasons, Central Catholic is thrilled to announce the permanent promotion of Coach Matt Flores to the role of full-time head coach for our storied baseball program. This decision comes after a thorough evaluation following our "Hire for Mission" process, and we are proud to entrust Coach Flores with leading our baseball program.

"Coach Flores’ extensive experience as both a collegiate player and coach, combined with his dedication to fostering excellence, positions him well to lead," remarked Ybarra. “We have full confidence that he will empower student-athletes to achieve their utmost potential both on and off the field.”

Believe in your team and believe in yourself. That has been the mindset Coach Flores has brought to the team these past seven seasons with the program.

Coach Flores expressed his enthusiasm as sole head coach by stating, "I'm excited for the current team, this upcoming season, and the future of our Central Catholic Baseball program. I know we have a lot of talent here and I am looking forward to watching these young men put in the work. I’m dedicated to helping them develop their skills on the field and in the classroom, all while maintaining their faith in God and in each other.”

Jason Longoria ‘96, President of Central Catholic states, "Coach Heep is a wonderful man and an amazing coach. Central Catholic and our young men have been blessed to have him lead the program for these past seven years and elevate Button Baseball to a championship-caliber level. I’m glad he isn’t going too far. We look forward to Coach Flores’ vision and passion for Button Baseball and a few more State Championships to come"
