National English Honor Society Chaminade Chapter

The National English Honor Society is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students who merit special note for past and current accomplishments in the field of English. It is founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta. The NEHS originated in 2005 and has been growing steadily since, becoming one of the largest academic societies for secondary schools.

“Gelast Sceal Mid Are” is Old English for “duty goes with Honor.” This powerful motto encapsulates the mission of the NEHS, which is to serve our peers, school, and community. By living up to this motto, a positive and lasting impact can affect the world around us.
NEHS has three primary goals:

  • to recognize on the societal level those who, based on academic grades and performance, merit special note for past and current accomplishments
  • to nurture members to further develop their abilities in the various fields of English; and
  • to encourage members to use their talents in the service of  others

How to Become a Member

The NEHS is open to secondary students who have demonstrated exceptional ability in such areas as literary analysis, media studies, composition, linguistic study, and creative writing and who meet the requirements of membership. All members must be invited by an active chapter. Members pay a one-time fee of $15 when enrolled in the Society. There is also a $5 fee for the day-to-day activities. For example, during our Christmas Activity with the little children, refreshments needed to be purchased for them. This would come from the day-to-day fee—all total for the one-time fee- $20.
